Punakaiki and Surrounds

Limestone underlies most of this area and is responsible for the area’s amazing landforms – high coastal cliffs, impressive river canyons, delicate cave formations and the well-known, bizarre ‘pancake stack’ coastal formations – a spectacular must-see when visiting the West Coast. The in-coming tide is the best time to view the blowholes, especially when it’s a bit stormy off-shore.

There is a Cafe, Souvenir Shop and Visitor Centre.

PUNAKAIKI CAVERN

The cavern is situated about 500metres North of the Visitor Centre. It’s an easy walk down to the cavern.

TRUMAN TRACK and BEACH

The track to Truman Beach is located 3km North from the Visitor Centre at Pancake Rocks. It is an easy 10 – 15 minute walk to the steps down to the beach. NOTE: The beach is only safe to access at low tide.
