Fes

Fes is the oldest of the four imperial cities in Morocco. The East Bank of Wadi Fes was founded in about 789 and the West in about 809. The two parts were united in the 11th century.

Fes is a centre for trade and traditional crafts, and until the 19th century was the only place in the world where the rimless red hat of the same name was made.

The old medina was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in1981.

After the medina and lookout we stopped at a pottery co-op. They made pots as well as tiles. This was where they also cut tiles for mosaics.

Tanning and dye pots for leather. We were given sprigs of mint to crush to mask the smell – I didn’t think it was that bad.
